Recognition
Usually we go through life and we have our share of acquaintances, friends, good friends, boyfriends, family, partners and x's of all the above. There are even people in our lives who we don't know but see often enough to sense some sort of familiarity with. In my second co-op term I worked most of the time at a client's site. While there we worked with the client but mostly we had our small group and did not interact much with the client's. Today I ended up returning to that same client site for some work which would make it 1&1/3 years from my original time with them. What was surprising is the lead client company's manager remembered me and welcomed me using my full name. That recognition considering I was one of many co-op students and this client being a major bank made me smile all day.
Throughout my life I felt that giving recognition for ones achievements is such a valuable gift we can give others which really does not take much on our part. Remembering people by face, or just acknowledging anything good thing someone has done. Especially the smaller personal things. Think how much better our relationships and self esteem of people will be if we just thanked them and took a minute to let them know that we appreciate even the smallest of things.
